This is a photo of 'Paina of the reef statue' Below is a brief outline of the legend about Paina.
A Maori legend tells how Pania left the sea people to marry Karitoki, a chieftain whose whare (house) was sited in an area now known as Sturm's Gully on Napier's Bluff Hill.
After Karitoki departed to fight in a long tribal war, Pania's original family called to her at sunset and at dawn. Unable, finally, to resist their siren voices, she swam out to meet them. When she attempted to return to the shore, however, she was drawn down to the caverns of the sea. Angered by her divided loyalties, Moana-nui-a-kiwa, lord of the sea, transformed her into a rocky shelf. Lying off the Napier breakwater, the beautiful sea creature is immortalised as Pania's Reef.

Art
Today we did our art with Room 14. First we had to use one colour to paint our
head and neck. Next we picked another colour and painted the shoulders. Last we painted the background with a completely different colour. Next week we are going to use different materials to do the eyes, mouth, nose and hair. We can't wait. Thanks room 14 for helping us.

Road Saftey
For the past 3 week we have been learning about road safety. We have been learning how to cross the road safely with the help from Constable Val and Constable Tanya and our school road patrol. We know when we cross the road it is safer to walk across the zebra crossing. We know if there is not one we have to look in all directions to make sure there is no traffic coming. Then we cross quickly. We also learnt that when walking down the street we need to watch out for cars backing out of drive ways, so we need to listen and look.

Visit From Room 14
We have been doing continuous line drawings of faces. We have practiced and practiced. We then chose our best one to colour. Room 14 came in to help us do this. Mrs Robertson Buddied us up with someone and they helped us to colour our pictures. They are looking really good. We had fun working with Room 14 and are looking forward to them coming and helping us finish our pictures.
